With tentacles stretching up to 120 feet in length, some individuals rival even the blue whale, the largest creature on Earth. Typically inhabiting the Arctic and North Pacific Ocean from Alaska to Washington, these jellyfish thrive in cooler waters.
Adorned with a mane of long, hair-like tentacles cascading from its bell-shaped body, the lion’s mane jellyfish earns its moniker from this distinctive feature. Its bell houses the mouth underneath, surrounded by tentacles arranged in eight clusters, each boasting up to 150 tentacles. These tentacles, armed with nematocysts containing potent venom, efficiently stun prey upon contact. The bell itself often displays hues of dark yellow or red, thicker at the center and tapering towards the edges. Moreover, the lion’s mane jellyfish possesses the remarkable ability to bioluminesce, emitting its own ethereal glow in the depths of the ocean.
Feeding primarily on small fish, tiny crustaceans, and even fellow jellyfish, the lion’s mane jellyfish employs its tentacles' formidable sting to ensnare its prey. These jellyfish are adept continuous swimmers, capable of covering vast distances aided by marine currents. While they typically prefer solitary navigation, instances of large swarms occur during periods of storms and strong tides. Breeding occurs between March and early May through external fertilization, with larvae settling on the seabed and maturing into polyps, eventually metamorphosing into fully-formed jellyfish within 30 to 40 days.
